The Wabash Tunnel is currently closed completely so that Port Authority contractors may install four new traffic control gates.
This work will help restore inbound access to the tunnel, which has been closed since the fall.
Inbound access to the tunnel was closed in late October when a tractor trailer accident damaged the gates that allow Port Authority to safely control the direction of auto traffic. Since then, efforts to repair the damage and reopen the tunnel to inbound motorists have been hampered by two additional accidents and delays in procuring replacement parts.
Completion of repairs and restoration of all traffic access is expected in June.
When the tunnel reopens, it will no longer offer overnight (11 p.m. to 6 a.m.) access. Read more.
The Wabash Tunnel provides a shortcut for motorists between Route 51 and the South Side. No Port Authority transit service operates through the tunnel.
Port Authority apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the delayed repair efforts and thanks tunnel users for their patience.
