Port Authority to upgrade electrical system inside Berry Street Tunnel beginning Thursday, July 13

Port Authority of Allegheny County will be upgrading the electrical system inside the Berry Street Tunnel beginning Thursday, July 13. The work is expected to take about a year.
The project includes upgraded lighting, an emergency phone system, and new carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide monitors.
Riders of the 28X, G2, G3, and G31 should expect up to 15-minute delays during the morning and evening rush hours for the duration of the project.
The $3.7 million contract awarded to Welling Power Corporation includes similar work inside the Wabash Tunnel. That work will be completed at a later date.
The Berry Street Tunnel spans 3,000 feet between Downtown and the West End. The tunnel originally opened as the Cork Run Tunnel on the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad line in 1865. It was rebuilt and widened in the 1990s.
