National Dump the Pump Day Scheduled for June 21

Port Authority is joining transit agencies across the United States in encouraging motorists to Dump the Pump and use public transportation as a way to beat high gas prices on Thursday, June 21, 2007.

“We encourage motorists frustrated by gas prices to give Port Authority services a try on Thursday. They’ll discover what thousands of area commuters already know – public transportation is cost efficient and convenient,” said Port Authority Chief Executive Officer Steve Bland.

Beginning Wednesday, June 20 and continuing through Friday, June 22, interested parties can register at Port Authority’s Downtown Service Center, 534 Smithfield Street, for a drawing for a free monthly pass.

The second annual National Dump the Pump Day is sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), a non-profit association of more than 1,600 member organizations, including almost 400 public transit agencies.

After housing, transportation is the second highest cost for American families, outpacing both food and health care costs. At current local prices, a commuter filling a 20-gallon gas tank once a week and parking for $10 per day downtown would spend about $467 per month – $392 more than the cost of a monthly Port Authority Zone Two pass that accommodates an unlimited number of rides.

As gasoline prices have increased, public transit systems across the United States are seeing an increase in ridership. Port Authority average weekday ridership increased in both 2005 and 2006, part of a nationwide surge as public transportation provided 10.1 billion trips in 2006 – the highest level in 49 years. APTA estimates households that use public transportation in lieu of driving save about $1,400 annually in gas costs alone.

“The 2007 National Dump the Pump Day is a public awareness day that emphasizes the environmental benefits of using public transportation,” said APTA President William W. Millar. “It is also a day for people across the country to make a difference as they conserve gasoline and help our environment.”
