Researching New Rapid Transit Technology

The Pennsylvania High-Speed Maglev Project is a proposed 54-mile magnetic levitation transportation facility connecting the Pittsburgh International Airport, Downtown Pittsburgh, Monroeville and Greensburg, PA. In January 2001, the Pennsylvania High-Speed Maglev Project was selected by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to conduct an account of the project’s environmental resources, air quality, noise assessment and construction costs, among other components.

A project team consisting of Port Authority of Allegheny County, PENNDOT and Maglev, Inc. - a for-profit corporation that has advanced the high-speed maglev effort for more than a decade – recently completed the Pennsylvania High-Speed Maglev Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) Study. Work is underway on the project’s Final Environmental Impact Statement which is scheduled to conclude by Fall 2007.

Federal funding is being pursued to advance the high-speed maglev project into final design and engineering. There are similar projects proposed across the United States, including one in the Baltimore, MD to Washington, D.C. corridor and a system connecting Las Vegas to Anaheim, CA.
