PA Transportation Funding and Reform Commission Proposes Solutions To Address State’s Critical Needs For Highways, Bridges and Public Transit

Following a 16-month study, the Transportation Funding and Reform Commission recently issued its final report. The report offers funding solutions to pay for critical improvements to Pennsylvania’s highways and bridges and for public transit which provides 413 million rides a year across the state.

Chaired by Pennsylvania Secretary of Transportation, Mr. Allen Biehler, the Commission was established in July 2005 following an Executive Order signed by Governor Ed Rendell. The governor created this nine-member commission to assess the crisis, identify possible solutions and make recommendations based on its findings.

Port Authority Chief Executive Officer Steve Bland thanked the Pennsylvania Transportation Funding and Reform Commission for the diligent work that made possible the release of its report on the future of transportation in the state.

“The Commission has done a very thorough job of looking at the root causes of our transportation funding dilemma and has made useful recommendations on how we can solve it,” said Mr. Bland. “We look forward to working with our elected officials and the public to turn these suggestions into a viable funding plan as soon as possible.”

“We believe the Commission’s range of recommendations for funding Pennsylvania’s transit agencies, both on a state-wide and local basis, provide a meaningful road map as we continue our dialogue on this issue, which is critical to so many local residents and to our economic competitiveness as a region.”
