Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Note: This release has been amended from its initial posting on October 31.

Pittsburgh, PA, November 1, 2009 -- Portions of Allegheny Avenue and Reedsdale Street on the North Shore will close for the next three days due to construction activity.

This work started on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, but poor weather conditions prevented contractors from making significant progress. The work, which includes placing beams for the elevated section of the North Shore Connector, was to be completed on Monday and Tuesday. Now, work also will be conducted on Wednesday.

The intersection will close starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009. Some lanes at the intersection will be closed. Police will help direct motorists through the area.

The work will cause the following changes:

  • Reedsdale Street: Heading west (toward the West End Bridge), traffic may travel through the intersection or turn right onto Allegheny Avenue, but not left toward the Allegheny River.
  • Allegheny Avenue: All thru-traffic will be detoured around the work area. However, motorists heading south (toward the river) may still turn right onto Reedsdale heading west.

The work is part of Port Authority of Allegheny County's North Shore Connector extension. This segment of the project includes construction of an above-ground rail line. A new T station will be built near the intersection of Allegheny Avenue and Reedsdale Street. Construction of the 1.2-mile T extension is scheduled to be complete by 2012.
