Pittsburgh, PA, Oct. 13, 2009 – Numerous Port Authority of Allegheny County bus routes will be detoured in Downtown Pittsburgh for about a year starting Oct. 20, 2009 due to the closing of the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Stanwix Street.
The changes involve detours of more than 20 routes in Downtown and the relocation of several commonly-used bus stops. The detours will remain in place for about a year and then start to be lifted as lanes of travel in the Stanwix Street work zone reopen.
A detailed list of route and stop changes is included below. Port Authority also will distribute a pamphlet on buses and at schedule racks this week.
The intersection will close to traffic to accommodate the underground construction of a new Gateway T station. The new station will serve the North Shore Connector T line when it opens.
Also on Oct. 20, one lane of Penn Avenue will reopen through Stanwix Street. Another lane of Penn Avenue will reopen in spring 2010.
The Gateway T station also is scheduled to shut down Oct. 31. The Wood Street T station is the closest light-rail alternative and is located about three blocks from the Gateway station.

INBOUND: Liberty Avenue onto Fifth Ave. Extension, left on Penn Avenue and stops at Gateway Center.
OUTBOUND: Liberty Avenue @ Gateway #4, right on Stanwix Street, left on 4th Avenue, left on Wood Street and back to Liberty. The stop at Liberty @ Market will be discontinued and a temporary stop will be added at Wood @ Fifth.
