Friday, September 05, 2008

Pittsburgh, PA – Stanwix Street between Penn and Liberty avenues will be closed beginning Monday, September 8, 2008 to facilitate work on the new Gateway Station as part of the North Shore Connector project.

Although the one block of Stanwix Street will be closed to traffic, the intersection of Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street will remain open during the day for this phase of construction but will close between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to facilitate night time utility relocation work. The intersection of Liberty Avenue and Stanwix Street will remain open at all times.

Motorists can use Sixth Street, Liberty Avenue, Commonwealth Place and Fort Duquesne Boulevard as alternate routes.

Pedestrian accommodations will be installed and maintained during the entire construction project, although for safety purposes, the Gateway Triangle will not be accessible to pedestrians.

The North Shore Connector is a vital transportation project that will efficiently link Station Square, Golden Triangle and the North Shore area, creating a cohesive business district. It will also enhance $1 billion in development occurring on the North Shore and benefit current North Side employment, retail, residential and education centers along with numerous dining and entertainment destinations.

In addition, the light rail extension will enable persons visiting North Shore attractions such as Carnegie Science Center (690,000 annual visitors), PNC Park (1.8 million visitors in 2007), Heinz Field (497,000 visitors in 2007) along with employees of corporate centers such as Del Monte Foods (600 employees) and Equitable Resources (450 employees), to leave their vehicles at a park-and-ride, board a train and enjoy the ride to the North Shore.
