Wednesday, September 06, 2006

The funeral procession for the late Mayor Bob O’Connor will detour several Port Authority bus routes in Oakland and Shadyside beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2006.

The procession will leave Freyvogal & Son Funeral Home for St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oakland around 10:30 a.m., closing portions of Center and Fifth avenues and Devonshire, Bayard and South Craig streets. These closures will cause detours for the 54C North Side-Oakland-South Side, 71A Negley, 100 West Busway-All Stops and EBO East Busway-Oakland. The streets will reopen, with the exception of South Craig Street and Fifth Avenue in Oakland, once the procession passes.

During the Mass, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., City of Pittsburgh Police will close Fifth Avenue from Dithridge to Neville streets and South Craig Street between Fifth Avenue and Bayard Street. These street closures will cause detours for the 28X Airport Flyer, 54C North Side-Oakland-South Side, 71A Negley, 71C Wilkinsburg-East Liberty, 71D Hamilton, 74B Highland Park-RIDC, 100 West Busway-All Stops, 500 Highland Park-Bellevue and EBO East Busway-Oakland.

When the procession leaves St. Paul’s Cathedral, expected to occur around 1 p.m., it will use the Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway to access Grant Street in Downtown Pittsburgh. While the procession is using the East Busway, bus service on the facility between the Neville Street Ramp and Downtown Pittsburgh will be interrupted. Several streets will close in the communities of Oakland, Shadyside, Downtown Pittsburgh, Greenfield, Panther Hollow and Squirrel Hill for the 15-mile funeral procession, causing delays for several Port Authority buses. Streets will reopen once the procession passes.

Customers are advised to expect delays in travel times. Some stops may be temporarily discontinued and temporarily established. Riders wishing additional information should contact Port Authority Customer Service at (412) 442-2000 or the TTY number, (412) 231-7007, for the speech and hearing impaired.
