The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Conference Of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO-Pittsburgh) is now accepting scholarship applications from high school seniors and college students in the Pittsburgh area for the 2006-2007 academic school year.

COMTO-Pittsburgh plans to award the academic and book scholarships to students of any race or gender who demonstrate a financial need and show an interest in or who are pursuing careers in or related to transportation. The scholarships, scheduled to be awarded in June 2006, will be the first granted by COMTO-Pittsburgh.

COMTO-Pittsburgh is a chapter of a national transportation organization that provides networking opportunities, career development, training and continuing education for all transportation professionals.

"We are pleased to be positioned to award scholarships to needy students within our region and encourage them to consider transportation as a viable and rewarding career choice," said COMTO-Pittsburgh President Inez Colon. "COMTO-Pittsburgh’s ongoing fundraising initiatives primarily support the organization’s scholarship fund with intentions to continue giving and increasing scholarship awards year after year."

Scholarship applications are currently available from high school guidance counselors and college and university financial aid representatives across the Pittsburgh area. In addition, applications can be mailed to interested individuals who call 412-566-5351 or email icolon@portauthority.org.

As part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness of its scholarship fund, COMTO-Pittsburgh will host a Valentine’s Day-themed fundraiser, A Loving Heart Scholarship Fundraiser, on Friday, February 10, 2006. The event will be held at the popular Downtown Pittsburgh restaurant and nightclub Bossa Nova located at 123 Seventh Street from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets for the A Loving Heart Scholarship Fundraiser are on sale now for $15. Items will be auctioned, prizes will be available and hors d’oeuvres will be served at the event.

The public should contact COMTO-Pittsburgh President Inez Colon at 412-566-5351 for information related to the scholarships and call COMTO-Pittsburgh Membership Chairperson Audrey Snyder at 412-566-5284 or email asnyder@portauthority.org for tickets and additional information regarding the scholarship fundraiser.
