Port Authority operates a zone fare structure. The amount of fare is based on trip length originating from Downtown Pittsburgh. Higher fares are paid for trips crossing more than one zone. Port Authority's system consists of:

• Three fare zones outside of the Central Business District
• Two fare zones (Free Fare and Downtowner) within the downtown area.

Zone limits are defined by the distance from Downtown Pittsburgh.

The Free Fare Zone was established to promote the use of transit within Downtown Pittsburgh, encourage intramodal transfer and reduce boarding delays. The Free Fare Zone is defined by the following boundaries:

• The Allegheny River
• The Monongahela River
• Ross Sreet, Bigelow Square, Penn Station, Liberty Ave @ RR overpass and 11th St.

For bus riders, fares are free within this zone from the first scheduled city arrival after 4:00 a.m. through the last scheduled city departure time before 7:00 p.m., seven days a week. After the 7:00 p.m. scheduled city departure, riders are required to pay a $1.50 Downtowner Zone fare. For "T" riders fares are free within this zone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This is a special zone established to provide lower fares for short rides within the area adjacent to Downtown. The Downtowner Zone is defined by the following boundaries:

North Side

• Ninth Street Bridge
• North Canal Street
• Cedar Avenue
• North Avenue
• Arch Street
• West Ohio Street
• Western Avenue
• Allegheny Avenue

North Side destinations within the Downtown Zone include: Allegheny General Hospital, Allegheny Center, Mercy Providence Hospital, Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), Carnegie Science Center, PNC Park and Heinz Field.

South Side destinations within the Downtowner Zone include: Carson Street from the Duquesne Incline through Station Square Station.

However, inclines are not included in the Downtowner Zone.

• Crawford Street
• Liberty Avenue
• Twenty-First Street

Eastern Border destinations within the Downtowner Zone include: Duquesne University, Mercy Hospital, Mellon Arena, the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, and the lower Strip District.

The Downtowner Zone is effective 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Zone Three encompasses all areas outside of Allegheny County within Port Authority's Service area.
