Overview
The West Busway is a very popular transit option for thousands of people who live, work and travel between western Allegheny County neighborhoods, Downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. The busway’s immediate success is due, in large part, to the significant bus rapid transit benefits this facility provides and the many park and ride lots located at busway stations and in suburban areas serviced by buses that use the busway. The West Busway also serves as a reliable rapid transit alternative to bypassing traffic congestion on the Parkway West (I-279).
There are six stations along the West Busway and five park and ride lots with approximately 560 spaces adjacent to the stations. In addition, seven satellite park and ride lots providing more than 1,500 spaces are served by buses operating over the West Busway. Currently, 8 Port Authority bus routes operate via the West Busway. Since the busway opened in September of 2000, ridership has reached approximately 9,000 customers per weekday.
