| Port Authority is moving forward with a combination of actions intended to counter a shortfall in state transportation funding. This shortfall is felt statewide by transit systems, PennDOT and other agencies responsible for roads and bridges, and is largely due to the federal government's decision not to approve tolling of Interstate 80.
The ongoing crisis now forces the Authority to propose route cuts, reductions in service, a fare increase and hundreds of layoffs. Meanwhile, we continue to seek a solution that will sustain our statewide transportation network and protect this region’s assets.
The Authority's proposal includes a 35 percent reduction in transit service across Allegheny County that would start Jan. 9, 2011. This would be the largest service reduction in the Authority's history, affecting every route in the system in one way or another.
An increase in fares would begin on Jan. 1, 2011. Cash fares in Zones 1 and 2 would increase by a quarter and premium fares would be charged on more than 20 routes.
A public comment was held from July 28 through Aug. 31 to collect input from riders, organizations and businesses. A public hearing was held Aug. 19.
We wish this course of action was not necessary, especially after making so many improvements to our system in the last few years. Unfortunately, we have little choice at this time.
Now, Port Authority's Board of Directors will consider a final approval of the proposal at its Sept. 24 meeting.
